Math Corps Philosophy
Everything begins with loving and believing in children.
Math Corps Basics
Since 1992, the WSU Math Corps, a combined academic enrichment and mentoring program for Detroit public school students, has worked to provide Detroit’s children with the kinds of educational and lifetime opportunities that all kids deserve. In a city where the obstacles to success are so daunting, the Math Corps has, from the beginning, been about making a difference and changing lives.
Math Corps Mission
The mission of the Math Corps is to empower and inspire children from under-served communities – through the teaching of mathematics and the fostering of self-worth, strong values and a sense of family – to build good lives for themselves and a more just society for all. The goal of the Math Corps then, is to ensure that every child, while cared for and supported in the present, goes on to graduate high school, fully prepared to succeed in college or other rewarding endeavor.
Math Corps Summer Camp
The Summer Camp & High School Bridge Program is the centerpiece of the Math Corps and serves students in grades 7-12. During camp middle and high school students come together with college students and mathematicians in a university setting to share in the learning of mathematics. Students learn from older students who serve as role models, and they teach younger students who look up to them in the same way. Students receive math instruction in both the basics and advanced topics, while being immersed in an environment of support and achievement.
Math Corps Results
Summer test scores typically increase, in six weeks, from pre-test averages of 30% to post-test averages of 90%. Best estimates place the high school graduation rate for Math Corps students at over 95%, with about 90% of those students going on to college.
